I was searching through YouTube this morning in hopes of finding a clip of Naomi Shihab Nye reading from her recent book Transfer. No luck there, but I happened upon another clip of her talking about inspiration and carrying poetry with you.
Nye carries a note about Philip Levine's thoughts about the muse and William Stafford's poem "The Sky."
Do you carry a poem with you?
I love this idea. My first poetry professor taught me to carry poems in my head - so far, I can only manage to remember two, Sexton's "With Mercy for the Greedy" and Whitman's "With One I Love." But I will now be carrying actual poems with me. It's a great reminder to stay in touch with the word and the world.
ReplyDeleteHi Rachel, I've carried Stephen Dunn's "A Secret Life" with me for years. It was re-gifted to me. I am going to carry two copies, one to keep and one to give away. I haven't read the poems you speak of, but I am going now to look them up.
ReplyDeleteThanks for your comment. Wishing you a fun weekend!
